One evening, when we were finishing our walks, I saw a man with two bags asking something to the passers-by. When they did not respond, with a louder voice, he enquired with us for any public toilet nearby. I pointed to a few. He had checked them all and found them closed.
Thinking whether I should offer him our apartment’s toilet, I asked him where his home is. “I stay outside” came the reply. I was taken aback! Usually, the homeless stay in the city’s downtown and I have never seen anyone in our neighbourhood. The pandemic fear had made him venture out.
The man then requested me to watch over his bags for a minute to finish his job in the thicket. Later, he thanked me and was about to leave.
Wondering about his condition, I asked if he has food for the day. “I will be happy to take anything”, he told. I went to my house, which was a couple of minutes away and quickly packed some food and handed over to the man waiting, along with little money.
I remembered the words of Om Swami, “What karma have I done to deserve my current life and that person- not even a roof “?
