I live in a gated community and last Sunday I was walking outside to buy vegetables when a woman and her child stopped me. She asked me if she knew Tamil and I said yes. She started telling me that her husband operates construction equipment and was supposed to be working here. She was from Coimbatore and had come looking for her husband. She said the guards don’t know Tamil and her husband’s number is unreachable. She gave me his colleague’s number and I requested our society guards to speak to him. The guard said her husband has gone back to Coimbatore. She started crying and saying she has no money to go back and it costs Rupees 750 to get back there. I had no idea if she was telling the truth or not. I was worried if I encouraged her she would just keep tricking people in future. I asked her if she needed something to eat and she said someone just bought her food from a van outside. It was strange because she said they had been hungry and had no money for food a few minutes ago. As I was wondering what to do, I remembered Swamiji’s words. “Everyone is deserving of your help. You don’t have to judge them. Do what is within your means and let it be”. So I gave her 1000 rupees and asked her to take the train home. I don’t know if she was genuine or not. I do know that most people would never beg if they could do something worthwhile. I hope she reached home and if she was a fraud, I hope she enjoyed a good meal for a couple of days. Everyone deserves it.
