Sometime back, I was briefly visiting a city where I had some business to take care of in a local Govt Office. On a hot afternoon, I reached the Office which was in the industrial part of the city. The lady at the counter said that I will need to photocopy my document. Since this was not mentioned earlier, I asked if she will be kind enough to use her Copier and charge me for that. She rudely dismissed it . I asked then if she could tell where I can find a Photostat place nearby as I was new to this part and didn’t notice any market nearby. Again she said that she was busy and it was none of her business. Enquiring with other customers, I was told that the nearest market was many miles away.
I came out to a deserted street and was thinking of what to do next. The only person I could see was an old lady sitting under a plastic shade selling tea and snacks.
Perhaps noticing me lost, she called out to me to come under the shade and not to stand under the hot sun. I asked if she knew of a Copier place nearby. She smiled and loudly called out some name. A moment later a nearby factory gate opened and a guard approached. The old lady told the guard about my situation. He smiled and asked me to give the document, went inside and a few minutes later I had the copies in my hand. I profusely thanked them and offered some money but they refused and said they were just glad to be of help. I was very touched by their gesture and realised that irrespective of the situation or station the life has put us in, we are always capable of some kindness. It’s just a matter of choice.
