When I lived in India, every time I left the house I always waved and said goodbye to someone. It was usually to my parents, brother or household help. They’d always say, “have a great day” or “have fun”, something that seemed so minuscule then. Now that I live in another country and in a city far from the people I know, I realize how much I miss those small actions.
A month ago, I ran into two parking attendants as they were standing by my car. We made polite conversation and they waved me goodbye which brought a big smile to my face. Since that day, every workday around the time I leave, I see them lurking around my car. We always make small conversation and then they both wish me a good day at work and with broad smiles wave me goodbye.
Their small gesture every morning brings a huge smile to my face and make this new city feel a little bit like home.
