Approximately five months ago, my friend Chakshu decided to teach children of the construction workers who were working on her campus. It was after college hours and seemed fun. But with time, her workload increased, and along with it, many other challenges cropped up. Not only was she about to be sent a notice by the hostel authorities for running an illegal NGO, but they also reprimanded her for some of the fun activities conducted with the children. Soon the initiative did not even have a place to hold the classes.
Chakshu persisted with her activities despite the hindrances, even in the cold and chilly winter in Shimla. We bought winter gear for children. And we prayed that the situation improves quickly. Soon things began to turn around. The VC of the University changed, and after five months, they decided to include the education program of the children in the official legal aid program!
Today the initiative holds classes in the University’s rooms, and things are looking up with increased participation from various batches of students.
